Thanksgiving: Gratitude, Generosity, and Chosen Family

Thanksgiving is one of the most widely celebrated American holidays, but like many cultural traditions, its origin story is complicated. The version most of us grew up with—the peaceful feast between Pilgrims and Indigenous people—is more myth than reality, a piece of propaganda that oversimplifies and erases painful truths.

Still, for many of us, Thanksgiving has grown into something different—an opportunity to gather with loved ones, share abundance, and reflect on gratitude. This is what makes it one of my favorite traditions, and one I continue here in Italy each year with my chosen family.

Gratitude in Practice

Around the table, it’s common to take turns sharing what we’re thankful for. This simple practice is so powerful—it shifts our perspective from what’s missing to what’s present, grounding us in love, connection, and abundance. Gratitude doesn’t erase challenges, but it does remind us of the support and beauty that still exist alongside them.

Science backs this up too: practicing gratitude regularly has been shown to improve mood, strengthen relationships, lower stress, and even support better sleep.

Generosity of Spirit

Thanksgiving is also about generosity—preparing food for one another, opening your home, and sharing time together. There’s something so nourishing about a holiday that focuses less on gifts or consumption and more on presence, care, and connection.

Even far from home, this tradition creates a sense of belonging. My “family” here may not be bound by blood, but we choose each other—and that choice feels sacred.

A Thanksgiving Meditation

To honor the spirit of the season, I’ve created a special Thanksgiving-inspired meditation that you can enjoy wherever you are. It’s a gentle invitation to slow down, connect with gratitude, and open your heart to the abundance around you.
